From Mistake to Masterpiece: The Story Behind Our Custom Bubble Watch Chain

I often get asked how I came up with the design of the bubble watch chain diamond tennis necklace. The truth is it started with a necklace I made that was unwearable. I made a full diamond bubble tennis necklace that flipped when worn — within five minutes of putting it on, I knew it was a no go. I had sunk a lot of money into something I couldn’t sell. I was sad about it, but it sparked a fire:  this isn’t over…what else can I make? 

Turning a "No Go" into a "Must-Have"

I knew I could find a new purpose for the beautiful custom-designed gold bubble bezels we painstakingly designed with other components. While rummaging through a bag of leftover gold vintage chain, hooks, and pieces, there were segments of solid gold antique chain from a watch chain that was too short. A lightbulb moment struck – why not blend the old with the new?

The Birth of a Unique Design:

With a vision in mind, we took the original bubble necklace, the antique chain segment, and other findings to our bench jeweler for a collaborative design meeting. The result was a stunning custom chain that perfectly complemented the bubble bezel settings. Importantly: we now had a diamond tennis necklace that did not flip!

Once the key elements and proportions were locked, we were able to really start having fun, making combinations, adding natural colored gemstone options, and more. These Bubbly pieces encourage you to be present in what makes life bubbly–confidence, beauty, and joy–as you rush through the busyness of your day. 

 

From One-of-a-Kind to Customer Favorite:

We initially thought this design would be a one-off piece, but when we shared it, the response was overwhelming. It was clear that this unique blend of old and new had struck a chord. Vintage jewelry collectors want one-of-a-kind pieces that feature old gold and repurposed diamonds for modern, everyday wear. Now we spend weeks and months sourcing the vintage and antique gold and diamond components to create these tennis necklaces for custom orders. Our intentional approach is now the fire that fuels the search, design, and creation of each 1-of-1 design, hand-built in small batches for people who appreciate the details as much as we do.

 

Embracing the Unexpected:

This experience taught us a valuable lesson: some mistakes are worth making. They can lead to unexpected discoveries and beautiful creations. It's all about embracing the unexpected and being willing to take a risk. If I hadn’t, this best-selling and totally unique 3 Graces of Gold design wouldn’t exist, and wouldn't bring joy to passionate jewelry collectors like me.

I’ve worked VERY hard for the money I invest in my jewelry and I know you do too. I didn’t grow up with a lot of fine jewelry. Every piece I buy and create for you I see as a deliberate action and investment that is special! I take that responsibility seriously.
