3 Questions I Ask Myself Before Buying Gold Jewelry Today

We all know that the price of gold is increasing at never-before-seen rates, which is changing how people collect jewelry these days. The (overly) simplified fact is that modern-made jewelry is pricier because everything from the gold itself to the labor involved costs more than it used to. This also means vintage jewelry is becoming more valuable as time passes too. Think about it: back in the day, gold was cheaper, allowing  jewelers to put more time and materials into their designs. This makes vintage and antique pieces more sought after by some people today and that can drive prices up to be in line with well-made modern jewelry.

I recently posted the backstory of a stunning retro-era statement ring on our Instagram. The boldness and intricate details of jewelry made in the late 1930s through the 1940s fascinate me. The abundance of raw materials and exceptional craftsmanship are evident. As a collector and vintage jewelry dealer, navigating the current jewelry landscape requires a more discerning approach. I've trained myself to look inward before adding a piece to my collection. These are the questions that help me make thoughtful purchases and curate a collection I truly love:

1. Beyond the initial spark, why this piece?

It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a beautiful piece. That initial "spark" is important, but I push myself to dig deeper. When a piece grabs my attention, I ask: Why am I truly drawn to this? Is it the unique design, the quality of the gold, or the craftsmanship? Or is it simply the thrill of acquiring something new?

This self-reflection helps me differentiate between genuine appreciation and impulsive buying. If the excitement fades upon closer examination, it might be the thrill of the purchase rather than the piece itself that's appealing. Stepping back at this stage can prevent future regrets.

2. Does this piece complement my existing collection?

Before making a purchase, I consider how the new piece will integrate with my current jewelry collection. I ask: How does this relate to what I already own? Am I adding something truly unique, or is it simply a variation of a style I already have?

While there's nothing wrong with having similar pieces, I think it's helpful to reflect on how any jewelry piece you acquire will complement what you already have and I strive for a well-rounded collection. This question encourages me to think about versatility and whether the new addition will enhance or merely duplicate my existing items.

3. Will I still love this in 10 years?

This is perhaps the most challenging question, but it's crucial for long-term satisfaction. I ask myself: Would I still choose this piece a decade from now? It's impossible to predict future tastes with absolute certainty, but this question forces me to look beyond current trends.

It helps me filter out pieces that might be appealing due to fleeting fads or external influences. By reflecting inward, I try to identify jewelry that resonates with my core aesthetic and personal style, ensuring its timeless appeal to me.

These three questions are my guiding principles when considering buying a piece of gold jewelry. They encourage mindful purchasing, help me build a cohesive collection, and ultimately lead to greater satisfaction with my acquisitions.
